Playlist #1 August 2023

As I started to sketch out ideas for the blog - I knew I wanted a monthly playlist series.

I have zero musical talent but I do rely on music a lot at work. There is nothing like the power of a fun playlist to help you grind through those tough tasks. Especially on a Monday!

This month’s playlist has a sweet nostalgic undertone to me – much like the month itself. I find that for a lot of people, the dog days of summer remind us of all the summers past. We subconsciously start to slip into “back to school” mode - even for the childless among us who have been out of school for 10+ years. People think the holidays are the most nostalgic season, but I think we’re in it right now.

Enjoy! I hope this doesn’t come off as me flexing my indie music taste in a cringe way. Instead, I hope it is a short and sweet high vibes playlist for those of us slogging away thinking about the beach, melty ice cream and sitting on a deck.

🎶Listen on Spotify.🎶

  • Highway – Lewis OfMan, Empress Of

    • Like if someone got into their parents (or grandparents) records and were inspired by America’s classic “Ventura Highway”.

  • Angel – PinkPantheress

    • More Barbie! IMO a sleeper from the soundtrack. There is something early aughts pop that makes it so comforting. Of course, the random fiddle breakdown reminds me of B*Witched.

  • Miss Chatelaine – k.d. lang, Orville Peck

    • I have been obsessed with this remix since the spring. I was a little young for peak k.d. but 90s Country has been having a moment for a few years now. It’s not hard to understand why.

  • Ether – RAC, MNDR

    • This song makes me weirdly nostalgic for, 2017? It feels crazy to say but already a distinctly different time.

  • Soak Up The Sun – Soccer Mommy

    • The cover we deserve for this here August.

  • Freak Me Now – Jessie Ware, Róisín Murphy

    • This song is relentlessly energetic and rides the nu-disco wave to great heights.

  • Psychedelic Switch – Carley Rae Jepsen

    • I am a huge CJR fan and I love the new album. This song satisfies a mid-aughts pop itch I didn’t know I had.

  • Sound of You – Tex

    • Also randomly reminds me of 2017/2018 in such a specific comforting way.

  • Roommates – Malcom Todd

    • Am I crazy to feel like this could be on one of the iconic O.C. mix tapes? IYKYK.

  • Dummy – Portugal. The Man, Chrome Sparks

    • To think I was obsessed with Portugal. The Man…in college…which once again…was over 10 years ago.
